About Caroline Bijl (1960) born in the Netherlands, lives in Amsterdam
My photography is a poetic reflection on time spent in specific landscapes such as deserts and volcanic landscapes, captured during long time travels. In these environments, I experience the overwhelming force of earth and nature, the vastness that robs me of any sense of footing, and the silence that is at once deafening and oppressive—and the existential awareness that such an overwhelming landscape brings.
This confrontation with boundless expanse evokes not only fear and awe but also an existential consciousness, which profoundly shapes my photography. I find myself continually drawn back to the desert and the volcanoes, deepening my relationship with those landscapes and yielding ever-new insights.
In the darkroom, my images detach from personal memories and experiences to gain their own autonomy. I work exclusively with analogue camera’s and use various techniques in my dark room, such as photopolymer technique or liquid light. Film rolls are often affected by fluctuating temperatures and high humidity. When printing, I use only expired, aged photographic paper, which inevitably introduces imperfections. I embrace these “errors” and incorporate them into my visual language as echoes of the landscape’s rawness. works with liquid light, and recently discovered the toyobo print aka photopolymer technique
